문자와 공간 —
타이포그래피와 공간이 만나는 자리
타이포그래피는 단순한 글자의 배열이 아닙니다.
그 자체로 시각 디자인의 핵심 구조이자,
세상을 이해하는 방식이 문자로 모습을 드러낸 하나의
언어입니다. 우리가 매일 마주하는 시각 이미지인
포스터, 사인, 웹 그래픽, 도시의 표지들 그 중심에는
언제나 ‘글자’가 있습니다.
하지만 타이포그래피는 평면에만 머물지 않습니다.
글자가 공간 속으로 들어서는 순간, 그 의미는 단순한
정보 전달을 넘어 빛, 재료, 거리감, 동선과 만나 새로운 힘과 존재감을 갖게 됩니다.
경희대학교 건축조경대학원의 전시
Type and Space는 바로 이 지점의 가능성을
탐구하는 데서 출발했습니다.
타이포그래피는 공간을 바꾸고, 공간은 타이포그래피에 숨을 불어넣습니다. 넓은 벽면을 가득 채운 문장은 하나의 환경이 되고, 층고를 가르는 수직 텍스트는
시선을 끌어올리며 공간의 리듬을 형성합니다.
단어 하나가 공간의 분위기를 달리하고, 반복된
글자들은 패턴이 되어 새로운 건축적 질서를
만들어냅니다.
이 전시는 타이포그래피가 어떻게 공간을 읽고
해석하는지, 그리고 공간이 어떻게 타이포그래피의
존재를 확장시키는지를 직관적으로 경험하게 하는
실험의 장이었습니다. 글자는 정보를 넘어 감각적인
구조물이 될 수 있으며, 공간의 흐름을 조율하는
중요한 요소가 될 수 있다는 사실을 이번 전시는
조용하지만 분명하게 보여줍니다.
Type and Space는 결국 타이포그래피와 공간이
서로를 필요로 한다는 선언입니다. 타이포그래피는
공간을 만날 때 생명을 얻고, 공간은 타이포그래피를 통해 표정을 갖습니다. 이 둘의 만남은 단순한 장식을 넘어 사유와 경험의 방식을 확장하는 디자인의 새로운 가능성을 제시합니다.
타이포그래피와 공간이 함께 만들어낸 새로운 시각의 세계,이번 전시는 그 가능성을 깊이 있게 보여준

Type and Space —
Where Typography Meets Space
Typography is more than the arrangement of letters.
It is the structural core of visual design,
and a language through which our way of understanding the world becomes visible.
Every visual image we encounter posters, signs, digital graphic, city markers
has typography at its center.
Yet typography does not belong solely to the plane.
The moment text enters a physical space,
its role expands beyond information.
It gains presence and power as it interacts with light, material, distance, and movement.
The exhibition Type and Space at Kyung Hee University’s Graduate School of Architecture & Landscape
began from this very intersection of possibility.
Typography transforms space,
and space, in return, breathes life into typography.
A sentence stretched across a wall becomes an environment,
while vertical text cutting through ceiling height
draws the gaze upward and creates rhythm.
A single word can alter the atmosphere of a room,
and repeated letters become patterns
that establish new architectural order.
This exhibition explored
how typography interprets space,
and how space amplifies the presence of typography
inviting visitors into a direct, sensory experiment.
Typography can become more than information.
It can evolve into a tactile structure,
a spatial element that orchestrates how we move and perceive.
This exhibition reveals that truth quietly, yet unmistakably.
Ultimately, Type and Space is a declaration:
typography and space need one another.
Typography gains life when it enters space,
and space gains expression when it embraces typography.
Their encounter moves beyond decoration
and opens new directions for how design can shape thought and experience.
Typography and space, working together,
create an expanded visual world,
and this exhibition offered a glimpse into that powerful possibility.
